AHANA Leadership Council Mission
The AHANA Leadership Council is an organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for all AHANA Leadership students at Boston College. As a part of the Undergraduate Government of Boston College (UGBC), ALC works to ensure that the interests and needs of AHANA students are voiced and heard. In addition, the AHANA Leadership Council shall serve as a resource for all AHANA clubs and organizations in a collective effort to uplift the community politically, academically, and socially.
ALC expects that each and every one if its members and affiliates uphold five major values that serve as the essence of the organization’s mission.
ALC Core Values
Service: embraces the concern, compassion, and sensitivity with which we care for our fellow AHANA Students as individuals on a one-to-one basis. The core value of service illustrates not only the mission of the AHANA Leadership Council, but also of Boston College and its commitment to the Jesuit motto of “educating men and women for others.”
Respect: is the acknowledgment of each person’s humanity and thereby we strive to ensure that all interactions between members of the council and students, administrators, and faculty are honest, dignified, and genuine.
Justice: we demand, from all our members, the highest level of commitment to obtaining absolute justice for all members of the AHANA community and the greater Boston College community.
Excellence: is the manner in which we shall strive to complete all our duties regardless of the level of importance.
Community: is the founding principle of our establishment. Everything that we accomplish or even attempt will always be in the best interest of the community. For if the community does not exist; neither does ALC.
Position Descriptions
2009-2010
Department Directors
Directors should engage the AHANA and BC community and be willing to reach out to cultural organizations and other groups on campus that work to uplift the community academically, politically, and socially. Directors are expected to meet with the Executive Department every week and should stay in close correspondence with the President, Vice President, and other AHANA leaders. The creative co-sponsorships, support and agenda of the departments will determine the Council’s impact on the Boston College community this year.
Staff Member Positions
This year, staff positions will be available under each department. If you are interested in becoming a staff member, please specify the top three departments or positions you would like to work with. Unlike last year, staff positions will not be considered general, and will have specific responsibilities in working with the directors and assistant directors of each department.
Chief of Staff: The chief of staff works extensively with the President and Vice President to ensure the smooth running of the council. The chief of staff is instrumental to the management of inter-departmental relations and is responsible for setting up meetings with the President and Vice President as well as managing general meetings for the council.

Initiative Programming Department Director/Assistant Director: The initiative programming department is a recently formed department responsible for projects with little or no precedence that allow us to broaden the scope of ALC’s mission. The director should be a self-motivated and creative individual. The IP department will need the resourcefulness and ingenuity to plan special projects such as: planning an AHANA faculty appreciation banquet, developing intercollegiate communication, cooperating to create an AHANA alumni network, and other special projects.
Finance Director/Assistant Director: The finance director will work closely with the President and Vice President to establish and balance the year’s budget. The director must have bookkeeping experience and should be comfortable communicating with people outside of Council regarding co-sponsorships and additional funding. The director and assistant director are also responsible for submitting weekly budget summaries to the President and Vice President.
The Public Relations Team will be responsible for the creation of flyers and banners for department initiatives and events and should find creative ways to advertise to the greater public.
Public Relations Director/Assistant Director: The public relations team should be in constant contact with the departments to find artistic and creative ways to advertise events and political issues. The public relations director and assistant director will also deal with media relations as well as the culture clubs and UGBC. The director will also choose a graphic designer that will work with the team and the departments on an “as-needed” basis.
Website Manager: It is the Website Manager’s responsibility to ensure that the website is up to date. When directors send information about their various events and announcements, the Website Manager must update the website in a timely fashion. The Website Manager will also work with members of the council to determine ways the website can be a resource for all AHANA students.
AHANA Caucus Director/Assistant Director: The AHANA Caucus serves as the liaison between the student clubs that partake in it, the ALC itself, and the greater AHANA community. Representatives from over 25 different student organizations assemble to address issues pertinent to the community and to collaborate with one another.
ALA Director/Assistant Director: The AHANA Leadership Academy’s primary responsibility is to inform and educate first year students on the academic, political, and social message of the ALC. Following a selection process in the fall, the ALA director will create meaningful and engaging program to stimulate the growth of the future leaders in the general AHANA community.
Political Action and Education Director/Assistant Director: The political action and education director will be responsible for bringing AHANA issues to the forefront of the Boston College community. Concerns should range from AHANA issues on campus such as academic programs and university policies to topics that affect the greater community. Directors should actively seek to work with other groups on campus and the larger Boston community. The department should engage in programming on matters such as Latino History Month, Christopher Columbus Day, Black History Month, Asian Pacific Heritage Month, AHANA/GLBT history and the state of affairs on university politics. The Political Action and Education Department will be responsible for holding one major political/social event on campus.
Women of Color Caucus Director/Assistant Director: The Women of Color Caucus is a liaison between ALC and other organizations dedicated to women’s issues to ensure AHANA women are always being considered. The director should initiate programming that addresses the ways oppression converges along race and gender lines for AHANA women. One of the Caucus goals should be to establish a social community of AHANA women on campus, and should keep in constant contact with their advisor, Leigh Patel Stevens and Dean Durrett.
AHANA Volunteer Corps Director/Assistant Director: The volunteer corps director will be responsible for coordinating consistent off-campus service projects for members of the AHANA community, including the department’s annual service trip. In addition, the department should serve as a liaison between the Council and other clubs dedicated to service (4Boston, PULSE, etc.).
Programming Department Director/Assistant Director: The programming director of ALC will be responsible for bringing the AHANA community together socially. The director will be responsible for the council’s signature events: the Boat Cruise, Showdown, and the Ball.
