Top 10 Things That All Freshmen Will Do At BC
10: You will pronounce McElroy wrong. We here at UGBC could give you the proper pronunciation, but we rob you of your right to have an upper classmen tell you (Hint: the ending doesn’t rhyme with the son's name on The Jetson's).
9: You will be looking for parties, and if you are a guy, you will be a bit disappointed. Now we understand that your friends at other universities will tell you how they went to a bunch of frat parties the first weeks of school. Things are a little different here at BC. Your first few weeks will be spent trying to get into parties, but with little success. DON’T BE DISCOURAGED. Things pick up after awhile. Take the time to go into Boston and enjoy the city before the schoolwork piles up.
8: You will get sick of dining hall food. Don’t get us wrong, the dining hall food is very good. In fact, it’s probably the best university food around. However, you will get stuck in a rut (BBQ chicken sandwich on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday...). Try to spice it up a little bit by trying new dishes and visiting other dining halls.
7: You will gain a few pounds. Don’t despair. The freshmen 15 isn’t that bad. The extra layer will keep you warm during the cold New England winter. You can always wear big sweaters.
6: You will join 100 different clubs, and maybe stay in one. That’s OK. Put your name on every list out there. If underwater karate is your dish, then go for it. Just remember to stick to something. If you don’t know what you want, then join UGBC. We could always use some help.
5: You will take the wrong bus. Newton and Commonwealth Ave busses look very similar. Here’s a hint, if you catch a bus just in time, it’s probably the wrong one.
4: You will ask and answer the same questions over and over again. "What’s your name?", "Where are you from?", "What are you studying?", and "Where do you live?". Don’t be afraid. Ask the questions. Give the answers. After a few weeks you will converse normally again.
3: You will wake up one afternoon to a bright sun, blue skies, and a 3:00 PM class. You will realize that one of those things isn’t necessary for the day. 'Missing' a class or two is okay. You’re an adult now and can make your own decisions. However, being an adult also means taking responsibility. You don’t want to be the guy or girl who goes to class one afternoon without realizing that you have a test or a paper due.
2: You will get homesick. It happens to the best of us. You might miss your Dad’s voice or your mom’s cooking and feel a sinking feeling in your stomach. Just remember that there are about hundreds of other kids who will feel the same thing. The homesickness will pass, and in its place you will feel the love and support of the many new friends you will make.
1: You will love Boston College. You won’t like it. You won’t enjoy it. You will love it here. The students, faculty, and staff at our school are special people. The sense of community is overwhelming and is a source of camaraderie among all who step within eyeshot of the Heights. You will meet fascinating people, learn from a brilliant faculty, and grow to be a valuable part of our community. Get ready for the best four years of your life.
