Learning to Serve

Learning to Serve

Learning to Serve is a service and mentoring program for freshmen led by a council of upperclassmen. The first semester focuses on adjustment to life at BC as well as an introduction to the issues of Social Justice faced by the greater Boston community. Students are given a chance to become acquainted with upperclassmen and BC while also preparing for their volunteer work.

In the second semester, small groups of about five are led by one or two council members to spend a few hours a week volunteering at a placement in the greater city of Boston community. Placements can include tutoring at local schools, soccer and arts and crafts at a Boys and Girls Club and working at homeless shelters. The group also meets weekly to discuss their placements and to hear from various speakers within the BC community.

The focus is on introducing the Class of 2014 to volunteer opportunities in Boston, facilitating adjustment to the BC community, and presenting relevent ideas of social justice. More information on joining LTS will be available in September 2010.

Through Learning to Serve, I was given the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the people who resided at my placement while simulaneously forming close relationships with my freshman group members and my junior leaders; I don’t think any freshman experience at BC can be more rewarding than that.

LTS was a great experience for me and really made me feel like I was getting involved in something worthwhile Freshman year. I made some amazing friendships in LTS and developed meaningful relationships with the people we were helping at my placement.
